Record My Screen – How Do I Do That?

Record My Screen“Record my screen” is what I used to look for on the internet when I was trying to figure out how to record my screen but with limited success. It’s frustrating when you know what you want, like: “How do I record my screen?” but you just don’t know the right “lingo”. Don’t worry I’ve been through that so I got you covered here.

In order to get better future results or when you speak with other people in the internet marketing community, the proper terminology for “record my screen” is actually “screen capture”. That’s right, you’re capturing your screen in order to save it into a video and share it with others.

If you look at my “Behind The Scenes” video I did, you’ll see that I used a screen capture software to record all the steps of the work I do daily from the comfort of my own home.

There are a several “record my screen” software available out there and here’s a list I put for you.

When I first started, I used a free screen capture software called CamStudio (available at camstudio.org) to record my screen. What I liked about that one was that it was free and pretty simple to use. What I didn’t like is that it wasn’t reliable if you recorded anything above 10 minutes. I discovered that the hard way, I did a full presentation of about an hour only to find out that there was an error therefore it couldn’t record my screen. I tried it 30 minutes, didn’t work, but the 2-3 minutes was working perfectly.

After lots of trial and I error, I found that the 12 minute mark was the sweet spot to be safe, so I had a 10 minute timer every time I’d record with it to be extra safe.  lol Wow so clunky. The other disadvantage of this one is that, it doesn’t come with its own video editing software so you got have your own. But it’s free and it’s does work if you do small videos under 10 minutes.

Next on my list is Debut from nchsoftware.com which did a pretty awesome job to record my screen. It’s been a while, I’m trying to remember here, if I recall correctly, they have a free version but with some restriction. Nonetheless, it was another great tool to record my screen. This one was more reliable, it captured my screen for long period of time 40-60 no problems.

You can also choose the input, so if you want your webcam to film you or if you just want to capture your screen. The downfall with this one is that you can put both the webcam and screen capture together at the same time. It also doesn’t come with a video editing software but the quality of the recording, I can’t argue with that, they got that right.

Record My Screen Like The Pros Do

Now, here’s what the pros and experts use.

On a Windows computer we use Camtasia from techsmith.com, man I just love this software to record my screen, you can use both camera and screen capture at the same time, this allows you to show your face when you’re teaching something, which allows your audience to connect better and bond with you because they hear and see you. The other cool feature is that it comes with its own video editing software, with simple easy to follow instructions with video tutorials and tech support.

If you’re starting out and want to add that professional touch, this definitely the way to go. Just a head’s up, when I recorded my behind the scene, I tried to recorded my screen all day. I didn’t work. So the next day, I re-recorded my screen in 2 hours increments. According to Tech Smith, there’s no maximum recording screen time but you got to keep in mind, it’s also subject to the space on your hard drive. They also have a Mac version if you own a Mac and a one month free trial.

Ok for Macs, the other software that’s available for you guys is called ScreenFlow by telestream.net. I’ve never personally used it myself but I know of many professionals who do use it. From my understanding and research, it basically offers the same features as Camtasia, I mean recording from the webcam and screen at the same time and offers its own video editing software.

There you have it my friend. Now you know what I did to record my screen. It’s now up to you to record your own material with lots of great value and share your video marketing content with everybody or make your own digital products.

What about you? Here let’s have a little bit of fun, fill in the blank to this sentence: “I will record my screen with ________”
